How Large-Scale Fleet Optimization Is Made Possible Through OEM Data

In partnership with Echoes, Europcar Mobility Group, Europe’s leading car rental company, has implemented a proactive maintenance strategy for its fleet of hundreds of thousands of vehicles, reducing downtime and improving the reliability of its customer service. This Europcar case study perfectly illustrates the transition from reactive management to strategic oversight.

In brief

Client: Europcar Mobility Group

Industry • Car Rental

Challenge: Gain real-time visibility into maintenance alerts for a fleet of industrial vehicles with high turnover, in order to maximize vehicle uptime.

Solution: Echoes' unified platform, connected directly to the multi-brand fleet.

Results: Improved maintenance planning, a significant reduction in unscheduled downtime, and a comprehensive overview of the fleet’s condition to enable rapid decision-making.

The Challenge

Managing a fleet of several hundred thousand vehicles for "industrial" use

For a company like Europcar, fleet management is not merely a support function; it is at the heart of its operations. The company faced three major challenges:

Time-sensitive issues: With vehicles traveling thousands of kilometers in just a few days, a standard maintenance alert becomes an emergency. As Sébastien Albertus, Fleet Engineering Director, points out, “an alert indicating a service is due in 1,000 km […] can sometimes mean five fewer days of commercial use.” The lack of real-time visibility into these alerts led to unplanned and costly downtime.

Fleet diversity: Europcar’s fleet consists of hundreds of vehicle models from different manufacturers. Managing this diversity with disparate tools was a logistical headache. It was imperative to find a solution that was “consistent across our entire fleet, regardless of the vehicle model” to ensure consistent management.

The Importance of Customer Experience: The primary goal is to “ensure a seamless experience for our customers.” A breakdown or downtime caused by a maintenance failure represents a breach of this promise and directly affects the brand’s image.

The echoes solution

A unified platform for real-time visibility

To address these challenges, Echoes deployed its platform, which is directly connected to manufacturer data, transforming Europcar’s approach from a reactive to a proactive one.

Centralization of OEM Data: The strength of the solution lies in its ability to consolidate data streams from dozens of different manufacturers. Echoes manages the technical complexity of API connections, providing Europcar with a single, standardized view of its entire fleet—a cross-functional capability described as a “real asset.”

Tracking critical alerts: The platform transmits fault codes and maintenance alerts in real time directly from the vehicles’ onboard computers. This allows Europcar teams to prioritize repairs and schedule shop visits before the problem becomes critical, thereby preventing breakdowns on the road.

Maintenance based on actual usage: Rather than relying on generic maintenance schedules, Europcar can now optimize maintenance based on each vehicle’s actual usage patterns. Accurate tracking of odometer and engine data enables proactive planning and reduces unnecessary maintenance.

The results

From Crisis Management to a Strategic Advantage

Implementation of the solution Echoes has enabled Europcar to go beyond basic maintenance and turn it into a competitive advantage.

Reducing fixed assets and optimizing operations:

By anticipating maintenance needs, Europcar has significantly reduced unexpected breakdowns and costly downtime, thereby maximizing its fleet’s availability.

Creating value for B2B customers

The wealth of data collected benefits more than just Europcar. The company can now offer added value to its own business customers. By analyzing driving data, Europcar can provide advice on eco-driving or route optimization, transforming a simple rental into a comprehensive and smart mobility solution.

Comprehensive and automated

Teams have shifted from managing isolated incidents to a comprehensive, automated approach. The goal is no longer simply to "locate a vehicle in the event of a problem, but to ensure the fleet operates at peak performance at all times."

Testimonial

“Unlike private individuals, we use our vehicles for industrial purposes, which requires more rigorous tracking of upcoming maintenance tasks. Thanks to Echoes, we can better plan maintenance and avoid unscheduled downtime.”
